Homes School is located in the beautiful hill station of Mussoorie in the
state of Uttaranchal at an elevation of 6500 feet above sea level facing
the panoramic Doon Valley. It is run by the Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF),
a registered society founded in 1962 and formally inaugurated on April 23,1963
by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with an initial strength of 75 children.
The school today has grown into a fine co-education residential cum day
school providing education to children mostly new refugees from Tibet and
destitute children. There are over 1,500 students and nearly sixty teachers
and staff in the school. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi with classes from Montessori to Class
XII and having humanities, science and commerce streams at the senior secondary
level.
The school aims at all round development of the child’s personality
by providing a good education and inculcating in the students a desire
for life long learning and motivating towards good moral values to become
a responsible citizen. The students are not confined to classroom teaching
but are being exposed to various outdoor and indoor games like football,
basketball, volleyball, throw ball, badminton, athletic events, cross
country race among boys and girls at house level and inter school level.
The students actively participate in co-curricular activities like short
plays, debates, quizzes, elocution, drawing and essay competitions.
The school also conducts outdoor excursion for Class XI students every
year to historical places like Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, and trekking in
and around Doon Valley to the other classes as well. The school boasts
of imparting modern means of education through extensive use of computers,
audio-visuals, well-equipped science laboratories and a spacious well-stocked
library. The school has also set up a teaching aids centre keeping in
view its importance for the teaching-learning process enabling the teachers
to provide more effective teaching. The senior students are also provided
with guidance and counselling from a school career counsellor acquainting
them about new courses available, their scope and prospect after the class
XII graduation.
To promote and preserve the rich culture and tradition, in addition
to Tibetan language instruction, traditional performing arts are taught.
Besides every year, the school observes a Tibet week, exhibiting the various
facets of Tibetan life and traditions to enrich the students about our
distinct culture and tradition to keep them alive in their minds.
The school has produced improved results consistently for the last four
years in the Class XII CBSE board examinations. The pass percentage in
the board examinations held in March this year was 88.73% (Class XII)
and 77.1% (Class X). Mr. Pema Damdul Arya is the current General Secretary
of the Tibetan Homes Foundation. Mr. Ngodup Norbu and Mr. Yankyap are
the senior and junior headmasters of the school respectively. The school
owes its success to the kind blessings and guidance of His Holiness the
Dalai Lama and to the moral and financial support of friends, sponsors
and donors around the world to whom the school will always remain indebted.
