CENTRAL TIBETAN SCHOOLS ADMINISTRATION
In May, 1961 His Holiness the Dalai lama appealed to the Indian Government for its support and financial assistance in the education of young Tibetan refugees. Following this, the Tibetan Schools Society(renamed the Central Tibetan Schools Administration{CTSA} in 1970) was set up to manage and fund Tibetan schools, working close consultation with the council for Tibetan Education.
CTSA currently has a Governing Body of ten members-four Tibetans and six Indians. The former are Tibetan representatives nominated by His Holiness, including in their number the Director and Secretary of the Council for Tibetan Education. The Indian members comprise three Indian Government officials, and three representatives who are experienced in administrative work connected with the Tibetan schools. For merly the Governing Body was chaired by the Minister or Deputy Minister of Education of the Indian Government, until a new policy decreed that all such working committees should be presided over by the Joint Secretary, which is now the case with this Governing Body. It meets once a year to discuss the finances and policy matters relating to the administration of the schools.
The School Under CTSA
Altogether there are 34 schools in the CTSA schools program, which fall into the two categories of residential (or boarding) schools, and day schools in the settlements
