THE SHMLA SCHOOL

Shimla was an ideal choice for yet another school, located at 7000 ft. above sea level. Historically, Shimla was the site of Anglo-Tibetan boundary Agreement of 1914, which established Tibet's de-facto independence.

The actual school campus is in Chhota Shimla, a few kilometers from the main town. The 'Torrentium' building. located among majestic deodars, was initially leased in 1961 and then bought outright in 1964 from the Bishop Cotton School. In addition, the campus was further expanded with the purchase of Villa Torrens with its outhouse and tennis courts.

The first group of students enrolled in March 1961 and the school grew steadily under the guidance of its first Principal Mr. Sonam Topjor Tethong. In the course of time six classrooms, a kitchen block, bathrooms and toilets and dining hall have been added to the school complex.

In 1973 the school was upgraded to a higher secondary school. However, with the introduction of the ten-plus-two system in 1976, the school could only prepare children for the tenth class examination as it lacked sufficient facilities to conduct the plus two classes. In the meantime a blue-print for additional classrooms has been drawn up by the Central Public Works Department and is awaiting approval. This school has ample space to expand its hostel and classroom accommodations provided the necessary funds are made available. Due to short circuit and the structural of the building being wood, the main portion of the hostel got burned down in 1983. Fortunately there has been no casualty except for minor burns and cuts. This was due to the presence of mind of the in charge of the elder students. The central Tibetan Schools Administration has sanctioned funds for rebuilding the hostel. In the meanwhile the majority of the boarders are housed in rented building near the school.

Today the school has 447 students, 325 of whom are boarders. A staff of 42 teachers, 15 sections from the first to tenth class.
