THE TIBETAN EDUCATIONAL PRINTING PRESS

A major problem from the outset was the printing of Tibetan text books as no facilities existed in India. It was decided in 1961 to set up a printing press and a start was made with a grant from His Holiness and later the Government of India gave Rs. 10,000. Since then the press has grown by leaps and bounds and is today a self-sufficient venture. Besides printing text books needed for the schools, the press takes orders to print books and manuscripts on philosophy, religion, Tibetan history and so on. More than 155 publications printed by the press are for sale which have brought in substantial revenues. The press now has its own premises in Dharamsala and is run by a staff of 15 trained printers. This press functions quite independently, though under the auspices of the Council for Tibetan Education.
